The continuing case of the elusive job

Sorry for the holiday hiatus.  But I'm back; ready to vent with a vengeance.  Now don't get the impression that my blog merely consists of therapeutic rants.  From now on, I'll just start each post with a job status update to show you how incredibly skewed the job market STILL is nowadays.  Take note: This is my last job-related ranting post for awhile.  Fuck all those news reports about improving.  This is definitely one from the No Shit files considering human resource is needed during peak retail times (aka Cashmas).

Over the course of the winter break, I have applied to sixteen jobs:

UMB Bank
Bank of America
(Yes, in spite of my anti-corporate stance I did "sell-out" to corporate banking interests.  But then again, refer to the freakin' title of my blog!  'ello!)
KU Medical Center
Kohl's
Waiter position

And the list goes on.....

I actually had an interview today with UMB.  It is nonetheless a call center rep, but at least it's stable.  I think I kicked the interview's ass--confident, eye contact, articulate, and what not.  But then the unfair corporate profiling practice struck me: the shitty credit report.

To me, an employer determining the hiring of an applicant based upon his/her credit rating is DISCRIMINATION.  What if you experienced an accident and had astronomical medical bills which you weren't able to work in order to pay them off?  How whack is that?  Seriously!  Granted, I did not have the luxury of a parent paying off my student loans (well, grandma did co-sign a private loan for me so I could graduate in time--thanks again).  Plus, I did have to resort to credit cards IN ORDER TO SURVIVE during the offseason (summer break for all non-education major people).

Logically, one would think in order to improve your credit score, you need to pay it off.  But in order to pay it off, you need money.  Money (usually) comes from a job (if you want to be ethical).  THIS IS THE PART THAT MAKES ME IRATE.  To judge an applicant's financial record is biased and prejudicial.

But then again, I do have BILLIONS of others to compete with in today's market.  I guess it's a method to weed out all the people which prompts the average Joe to become even more competitive and resort to dirty tactics to get that 25k annual position with a $1,000 deductible premium.

So, I know what you are thinking, "Quit whining, bitch and just get a job at McDonald's if you need to, Jesus!"

And you know what?  For the first time I am going swallow my pride and agree with that presumption.

COLLEGE = BIG MISTAKE (I'll elaborate on a later post.)
